Campus Telephones

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) offers free public campus telephones in key campus locations for use by the University of Minnesota community.

With the growth of personal mobile telephone services and widespread use of them on campus, pay phones are no longer cost effective to retain. OIT installed new campus telephones in place of some of the outgoing pay phones.  Services available on these phones include  local calling, 911 emergency calls to the University police, and information calls to campus Information Services at 612-625-5000.

Types of Public Phones on Campus

There are a few different types of public phones on campus:

  • Campus Phones provided by OIT
  • Pay phones available until OIT replaces them with Campus Phones
  • Code Blue Emergency Phones, connected directly to the University Police 911 operators. Provided by the Department of Central Security.
  • Yellow Box Phones provided by some other departments
