Campus Implementation
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is embarking on a VoIP initiative using Aastra/Intecom technology in order to utilize our current Private Branch Exchange (PBX) telecommunications system on the Twin Cities campus.
Installing VoIP communication infrastructure allows OIT to provide voice services to University locations that are unsupported by traditional telephone service. This project provides VoIP service to several University organizations that have requested inclusion in the University communications infrastructure, while saving on costs associated with Centrex and Long Distance services.
VoIP implementation is not meant to replace traditional telephone service on the Twin Cities campus. It is a means by which places such as Rochester, Arboretum, Extension Services, and other off-site locations may benefit from shared infrastructural resources.
OIT's strategy for implementing of VoIP is to ensure that this exciting new technology integrates successfully with the University's existing telecommunication infrastructure, recognizing the advantages and challenges for both of the University's separate voice and data networks.
We plan to implement this technology in a prudent and dependable manner, using products that provide long-term value and are scalable for use throughout the University's Twin Cities campus when our present voice communication system is retired.
